Merck Plant 2000 Trees: A Corporate Social Responsibility Program
PT Merck Tbk, a pharmaceutical and chemical company from Germany, is currently running its “Youth Take Action” (YTA) program which aims to preserve local environs through ‘green’ activities regionally themed “Together We Grow” (TWG).
YTA is a community empowerment program providing educational activities for middle and high school teens who live in Merck’s surrounding neighbourhood, Gedong. This year, the focus of YTA is the green program, which was decided upon by the participants in initial group discussions.
At the same time, Merck in the Asian region has also launched the “Together We Grow” (TWG) program. This is Merck’s tree planting initiative which spans 7 countries: Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines. The events were simultaneously held on October 10, 2010.
In order to support TWG, YTA planted a total of 1000 trees in Gedong area by the end of 2010. “It is expected that by the end of 2011 we will have planted a total of 2000 trees in and around Gedong,” said Nils Kristian Moen, Director of Merck, after the planting of trees and the implementation of TWG in PT Merck Tbk, Kelurahan Gedong, East Jakarta on October 10, 2010 added that.

Besides YTA, PT Merck Tbk operates a social program in which Merck provides free medical consultation services for the community in Gedong area.
